Three Months as an Amazon EHS Manager: Experience with Mentorship, Safety & Data

Originally published December 2019. Sharing now to reflect on the first three months of one of the most formative leadership experiences of my career.

After three months at Amazon, I reflected on my experience as an EHS Manager. While Amazon often faces media scrutiny, I found the culture, leadership, and data-driven approach to be energizing and rewarding. The commitment to continuous improvement, high-caliber colleagues, and strong safety culture set Amazon apart from previous workplaces.

My Experience as an Amazon EHS Manager: First 3 Months

🤔 “Wait… You Work for Amazon?”

My friends (EHS pros and otherwise) were skeptical when I took this job — Amazon doesn’t have the kindest media reputation — and I know I’ve been off the grid a bit. So for those wondering how my new role is going… here’s a peek inside.

Spoiler alert:

I am so incredibly happy here. This job absolutely takes the cake.

💡 What Makes It Different?

Blueprint-style infographic showing a timeline of an EHS manager’s first three months at Amazon. Includes icons for diversity, feedback, data, and safety culture, with the quote “We work hard. We have fun. We make history.” at the top.

Yes, there are challenges — but unlike anywhere else I’ve worked, we are expected and empowered to solve them.

My favorite part? The people.

I serve an amazing population of Associates and work alongside a team of driven, brilliant EHS professionals. The phrase “Hire and Develop the Best” isn’t just a poster — it’s embedded in everything we do.

This week I met 30+ of my peers. I was blown away by the level of knowledge, passion, and care for people. These are folks who take safety seriously, love what they do, and push each other to grow every day.

🌎 Diversity That’s Real

I have never worked in an environment this diverse — in every sense: gender, race, nationality, orientation, ability, and beyond.

That diversity matters. It pushes us to Have Backbone; Disagree and Commit. It helps us Insist on the Highest Standards. And it makes our team better, stronger, and more honest in how we show up for each other.

👩🏽‍💼 The Best Managers I’ve Ever Had

My managers:

  • Give candid, actionable feedback

  • Invest in my development

  • Raise the bar without losing compassion

  • Embody “Learn and Be Curious”

    It’s rare — and I’m grateful.

🦺 Safety Culture with Real Backing

I believe Amazon is taking its “Earth’s most safety-centric company” vision seriously.

We’re working fast, yes — but we’re also working smart, with more drive and resources than I’ve ever seen in this field. It’s exciting to be part of a team that doesn’t just talk about change… but builds it.

2025 Reflection:

This post was the beginning of me understanding just how powerful a supportive, high-performing environment could be. I see now how much that foundation shaped my ability to scale safety strategy, mentor others, and lead with clarity. It was a short time — but it planted seeds I still carry.
